Congress and President Obama are on the verge of reinstating President Bush’s military commissions with new rules that still don’t meet U.S. or international standards–essentially, kangaroo courts. The Response is a courtroom drama based on the actual transcripts of the Guantanamo military tribunals [aka the Combatant Status Review Tribunals]. The film revolves around the tribunal of a suspected enemy combatant and the three military judges who must decide his fate. The movie – for the first time ever – holds a mirror up to the tribunals and allows an audience to see and hear for themselves what takes place in Guantanamo.

Starring Aasif Mandvi (The Daily Show with Jon Stewart), Kate Mulgrew (Star Trek: Voyager), and Peter Riegert (Animal House, The Sopranos), The Response was recently named the 2009 ABA Silver Gavel Award winner as best of the year in Drama & Literature. This is the American Bar Association’s highest award. The film has been screened at the Pentagon and the Department of Justice, won the Audience Award for Best Film at the Politics on Film festival in Washington, D.C., and has, to date, been accepted as an official selection to seven Academy Award qualifying film festivals.
